Have you ever read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury? In that story the protagonist's wife is obcessed with things like "surface," except that in their world they have made the entire wall a surface interface.
Also, did you know that the Fahrenheit scale was developed by Mr. Fahrenheit in Germany? The 0 degree marker was the coldest day in Germany the year the thermometer was invented and 100 degrees is the temperature of a horse. And you know how they take the temperature of animals...
